Lee Jean Youn

패션 디자이너 이진윤은 한국 전통의 미감과 정서를 현대적으로 재해석해 낸 작업으로 국내외에서 여성복 디자이너로서 인정받아왔다. 젊은 디자이너로서 직면하는 현실적 한계들에 대한 진취적인 대응방식과 한국 전통 소재의 현대적 수용과 뿌리 찾기, 재창안으로 이어지는 지속적 탐구와 실천적 노력은 이진윤 작업의 중요한 원동력이다.

이진윤은 홍익대학교 석사 과정 당시, 캐주얼 소재인 진(jean)에 파티룩이라는 새로운 이미지를 부여한 작품으로 국내 패션계의 주목을 받았던 그는 활동 반경을 넓히기 위해 참가한 2009년 망고 패션 어워드우승을 계기로 유럽 패션계 진출의 신호탄을 쏘아 올렸다. 국제 무대에서 자신감을 얻어 도전한 파리 오뜨 꾸튀르 씬에 한국 디자이너로서는 최연소로 입성하여 언론의 집중적인 주목을 받기도 했다. 2010년 S/S 컬렉션에서 죽음과 생에 대한 그의 철학을 웨딩이란 매개체로 엮어 독창적인 웨딩 세레머니를 표현한 것을 시작으로 이후 오뜨 꾸튀르에 연속으로 참여하였다.

외적으로 드러나는 성취에 자족하지 않고 이진윤은 한국의 미를 현대적으로 해석하는 데 집중하며 전통 실크 오간자의 주름을 잡아 재봉해 천을 만들고, 그 천으로 만든 다양한 실루엣의 의상을 선보였다. 무엇보다 한국의 아름다움을 표현하기 위해 한복을 입었을 때의 모습이나 한국인의 정서를 동시대적 감각으로 표현하고자 하였다. 소재적으로는 소박하고 소탈한 삼베, 섬세하고 투명한 느낌을 주는 모시 외에도 창호 한지에서 모티프를 차용하였다. 창호 한지는 새, 바람, 물소리를 투영하며, 부드러운 빛을 전달해주는 소재로서 정신적 치유로도 연결되는 점에 영감을 받았다. 자연의 결과 온도, 양감을 시각화할 수 있도록 전통 직물들을 다양한 기법으로 봉제하고 후 가공하여 새로운 소재를 만들었다.

결과적으로 이진윤의 작업 안에 비침과 가림, 부드러움과 가벼움, 아련함과 투박함, 시원함과 따스함 등 상반되는 여러 물성과 감성이 굽이친다. 아름다운 한 마리 새를 떠올리게 하는, 깃털처럼 가벼운 주름과 흐르는 듯한 드레이프와 푹성한 볼륨이 특징적인 이진윤의 컬렉션을 통해 현대적 장인의 고집어린 시상을 마주하게 된다.

Fashion designer Lee Jean You, who reinterprets the beauty and sentiment of Korean traditions in a modern way, is recognized both at home and abroad as a designer of women's wear. His principle motivation toward his works would fall into two elements: first, his active attitude to the limitations he encounters from time to time in the real world as a young designer and second, his continuous research and practice to use traditional Korean fabrics with a contemporary touch, find their roots and finally re-create them.

While Lee was enrolled in his master's degree course at Hong-Ik University, he created a new concept of "wearing denim for parties", which made the fashion industry started paying attention to him. After winning the 2nd edition of the MANGO Fashion Award in 2009, he entered the European fashion world. He confidently entered the Paris haute couture scene as the youngest European Korean designer garnering considerable attention by the media. In 2010, he presented his unique wedding couture for S/S Collection, expressing his philosophy of life and death through the medium of weddings. Ever since, he has participated in subsequent haute couture shows.

He did not rest on these achievements but worked even harder to focus on reinterpreting Korean beauty in a modern sense. He crimped traditional silk organza to sew it into cloth, creating various clothes with different silhouettes. Above all, to articulate the beauty of Korea, he sought to express the appearance of the Korean Hanbok and Korean sentiments in a contemporary sense. As for the materials, he not only uses simple hemp cloth or delicate ramie cloth but also Changhoji, a traditional paper, to create his motifs, which gives a delicate and transparent feeling. Changhoji reflects the sounds of birds, winds and water and conveys a soft light, linked to mental healing. To visualize textures, warmth and shadows, he sews traditional fabrics in various techniques, producing new materials.

Ultimately, Lee Jean Youn's work combines seemingly conflicting properties and emotions such as reflecting and concealing, softness and lightness, vagueness and roughness, and coolness and warmth. Lee Jean Youn's rich collection, featuring feather-like wrinkles and flowing drapes, is reminiscent of beautiful marine birds and poetic images of modern artisans.
